A message from Dr. Rob Hale, Head of the WKU English Department:
Dear English Majors,
Greetings and happy new year! I hope you’ve all had a restful break and are gearing up for a productive new semester.
As we begin a new semester, I’m very excited to update you about the English Department’s scholarship system. Last year, we tried out WKU’s TopDollar system, but it did not have the flexibility we needed, so we’re returning to our own, in-house system. English majors and minors, preferably sophomores or above with GPA’s of 3.0 and above, are eligible to apply for scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year. Applicants should not be graduating before May 2018.
Applicants should go to http://wku.edu/english/awards-and-scholarships/index.php and click on 2017 Scholarship Application. The application will come up with instructions to fill it out and email it to the English Department Office. Applications are due on or before Friday, February 3, 2017.
I also wanted to remind you about some excellent resources for information. Of course, your advisor is your best resource, but another excellent font is our department’s web page. Please browse the page to learn about our programs and events. The current students page provides an index to topics of special interest to you. We also provide information on ways to get involved in the department—The English Club, our creative writing journal Zephyrus, our journal of English scholarship The Ashen Egg, internships, and The Film Club are just a few of them. First Floor Cherry is new student blog that should be your go-to source for engagement opportunities in the department. Another helpful resource is the English Department Help Guide: it consolidates a list of resources and contacts related to issues that might come up during the semester.
Also, join us on social media to stay on top of opportunities and news in the department: like us on Facebook, and follow us on Instagram.
All best wishes for a wonderful semester–if there’s any way I can assist you, just ask.
Welcome back to firstfloorcherry! Stay tuned for more need-to-know info about the spring 2017 semester.
